About The ARK:

The ARK at JFK will be the world’s only animal terminal and the first USDA-approved, full-service 24-hour privately owned airport quarantine facility for the import and export of horses, pets, birds, exotic animals and livestock. This, comprehensive multi-purpose animal handling and air cargo facility at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) will also house a veterinary clinic, a pet boarding and grooming facility, and a veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Racebrook Capital, a New York-based firm is developing, financing, constructing, operating and managing the 108,650 square foot animal handling center and additional 63,515 square foot cargo handling facility.

Animal Attendant, ARK Pet Oasis

Part-Time, Night and Weekends (multiple openings)

Position Description:

Reporting to the Managing Director and/or Shift Supervisor, Attendants will be responsible for providing short-term care for pets including, walking, feeding, and cleaning. In addition, Attendants will be expected to clean and maintain the kennels and the facility.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide high quality dog, cat and other small animal care
  • Walk dogs to facilitate relief prior to or after travel
  • Feed pet clients and provide medication as needed
  • Kennel maintenance after the client visit
  • Crate cleaning upon pet arrival
  • Launder soft goods used in pet client care
  • Monitor any changes in soundness and health of pet clients and report information to supervisor
  • Maintain pet notes in system
  • Basic maintenance and repair of crates and kennels
  • Provide front desk support as needed including reservations, registrations, emails and inquiries

Skills and Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous companion animal experience – must be confident handling dogs and cats; dog training experience preferred
  • Good oral communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize, with sound decision-making skills
  • Dependable, reliable, and efficient
  • Willingness/ability to work non-standard shifts
  • Must be able to lift loads (up to 35 lbs.) and stand for prolonged periods of time – this is not a desk job
  • Working knowledge and proficiency in Outlook, Word and Excel, preferred
  • Prior experience at a kennel, pet boarding, or veterinary office, preferred
  • Proficiency in a foreign language such as Spanish, French and/or German, a plus
  • Must meet Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Port Authority, and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) requirements which includes a background check and fingerprinting
  • Required to sign confidentiality agreement for privacy and biosecurity measures at The Ark facility

Animal Attendant/Groom

Position Description:

Reporting to the Director of Administration or shift supervisor, Animal Attendants are responsible for the overall maintenance and upkeep of the import and export areas within the facility as governed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Attendants will be responsible for feeding, cleaning, grooming and providing adequate care for primarily horses but also livestock and birds.

(Full and Part-Time Positions Available; Nights and Weekends)

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Administer and adhere to feeding & cleaning schedules
  • Handling and walking animals to stalls or designated areas during USDA and Chief Medical Officer inspections and upon release from facility
  • Stall preparation and maintenance pre-and post-arrival and during animal’s stay
  • Administer cleaning and disinfecting of import quarantine and export barn areas
  • Monitor any changes in soundness and health of the animal and report information to supervisor
  • Basic horse grooming
  • Basic maintenance and repair of equipment in quarantine or facility
  • Loading and unloading of supplies/hay/feed with small motorized equipment
  • Knowledge of and adherence to biosafety measures, including quarantine showering and shower-out procedures

Skills and Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Equine and/or large animal handling experience required; 4+ years experience and stallion handling, preferred
  • Excellent oral communication skills and the ability to work as a team and independently
  • Sound decision-making skills and experience in recognizing changes to an animal’s health status
  • Dependable, open to learning new skills and improving processes and able to prioritize tasks
  • Willingness/ability to work non-standard shifts
  • Must be able to lift loads standard for a barn setting, and stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Must meet Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Port Authority, and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) requirements which includes a backgroundcheck and fingerprinting
  • Required to sign confidentiality agreement for privacy and biosecurity measures at The Ark facility
